MOTHS
Luna Moths May 2021 - Silk Moths February-March 2022
Two collections, two separate years, similar theme. I’ve always wanted to create a collection of luna moths. It’s always been in my sketchbook just waiting for its time! Finally, May 2021, I did it! I tend to create work based off a creature that I feel a gravitational pull towards around my birthday in May. It’s like a part of me comes out through my work. I experimented with a taller form and carving patterns with the luna moths.
The silk moths were created when I got back home from vacation in Florida. I’m always inspired by the fact that bugs are still around during winter in the south. I was also very inspired by my large, framed butterfly and moth collection. I wanted to paint what I was looking at every day. I am so fascinated by entomology - the study of insects.
Along with the moths I also created lady beetles and flower inspired works. Creating work referenced by warm weather flora and fauna excites me to start gardening in the spring! And of course, what’s a moth collection without moon mugs!
